NUS Latest Research Suggests Drinking Tea May Help Protect Against Dementia.

Drinking tea is good for you, we all know that! The many health benefits have been widely documented over the years but latest research relates specifically to the impact drinking tea can have on dementia. The National University of Singapore released findings on 16th March 2017 regarding the regular consumption of tea as beneficial in protecting against this debilitating disease.

The study, led by Assistant Professor Feng Lei from the Department of Psychological Medicine at National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, found that not only was tea beneficial for keeping cognitive decline at bay, it was even more so for those with a genetic predisposition to the disease.

The longitudinal study involving 957 Chinese seniors aged 55 years or older has found that regular consumption of tea lowers the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly by 50 per cent, while APOE e4 gene carriers who are genetically at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease may experience a reduction in cognitive impairment risk by as much as 86 per cent.

These findings also suggest that all varieties of tea have this positive affect, as long as you brew from the leaves. This is great news! It means that whether you’re a black tea lover, a green tea or oolong lover, your brain function will benefit from each cup!

You all know how much we love tea.

We’ve baked using tea, made scones, smoothies and chia pudding using Japanese Matcha Green Tea, we’ve even experimented with slow cooked Silverside using our herbal ayurvedic blend, Tulsi Detox.

As creative as we’ve tried to be with our tea love, one thing we had never even considered making was….. TEA COCKTAILS! Why had we not thought of this??

By infusing loose leaf tea into their recipes they’ve managed to produce beautiful and unique cocktail ideas which are well worth a try! Their IG gallery truly is a sight to behold

We’ve been very excited to have Teatini use our Green Paradise green tea blend to create yet another cocktail to get the taste buds tingling. Here’s the recipe courtesy of the girls, why not give it a try?!

GREEN PARADISE VODKA FIZZ

The stunning Green Paradise Green Tea Blend blend by QTea Co is such a delicious green blend! This drop will definitely have you daydreaming of getaways to your very own island paradise. With ingredients of green tea, marigold petals, safflowers, jasmine flowers, hibiscus, with lychee and mango flavours, it is the perfect summer cooler in a vodka fizz style cocktail.

Ingredients:

45mL Green Paradise tea infused vodka

15mL Elderflower Liqueur

15mL fresh lemon juice

Soda water to top

Method:

Infuse 1 tsp Green Paradise/50mL vodka, 45 mins, fine strain (noting that you’ll loose 5mL vodka through the direct infusion process)

Stir tea-infused vodka with Elderflower Liqueur and lemon juice in a highball glass with ice, top with soda water.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, scones are said to have originated in Scotland in the 1500’s. In fact the Oxford English Dictionary suggests that the word originally came into use in 1513. There are two differing pronunciations for the word – “scon” (rhymes with “gone) and “scone” (ryhmes with “phone”). In British English the two variations are used according to both regional and class associations, but in general terms, the first version is associated with the northern parts of England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The second version is associated with southern parts of England, America (US English) and Irish natives.

Scones are a standard addition to the traditional Devonshire Tea and are generally served with jam and cream. A little sweetener is sometimes added and this can also be in the form of currants, sultanas, raisins or dates. Scones can also be served as a savoury treat, with either cheese or potato added.

Easy Matcha Scone Recipe

For our scones, we decided to shake it up a little and take a less traditional approach by adding some QTea Matcha Green Tea Powder. The irony is that Matcha is absolutely packed with health benefits and is known as a superfood, but we chose to serve our scones with more than modest lashings of strawberry jam and cream.. Oh well.. we did also add some fresh strawberries for additional goodness..!

COOKING WITH TEA – Corned Silverside with Tulsi

THINK TEA IS JUST FOR DRINKING?

As the popularity of tea as a beverage has inceased, so has the concept of using tea and tisanes as ingredients when cooking. We’ve been using some culinary creativity in the kitchen recently and have come up with a few delicious recipes using our QT range of tea. Here is our first – it’s definitely a winner!

SLOW COOKED CORNED SILVERSIDE WITH TULSI

Technically we haven’t used a “tea” in this recipe, we’ve used our Tulsi Detox herbal blend, which is known as a tisane (a herbal infusion or beverage to be brewed and consumed as a tea, most often with health benefits)

Tulsi (or Holy Basil) is an Indian herb known as “The Elixer of Life”. It’s traditionally been cultivated as a Sacred Plant and has been used for thousands of years for it’s healing/Ayurvedic properties. Tulsi is known as an adaptogen, balancing different processes within the body, and aiding stress and depression.

Slow Cooked Corned Silverside with QT Tea Co Tulsi Detox Herbal Blend

Exact measurements for this recipe aren’t necessary, it’s easy, so just go with the flow, no need to be a master chef!

We experimented with a couple of tablespoons of our Tulsi Detox herbal blend & corned silverside in the slow cooker. Add a chopped onion, carrots & celery, brown sugar, a good splash of verjuice, a few bay leaves & sprigs of thyme, slices of lemon, and two cups of water.

Slow cook on low for 8 hours and voila!

DELICIOUS! AND SO EASY!

Cooking with tea opens up a whole new world of culinary possibilities and as this recipe shows, it doesn’t need to be difficult or time consuming to be yummy!
